BUSH TO BLAME (CONT.)

Sun on Fire, Unleashes 3 More Major Flares

Launching a fierce attack on President Bush, former General Wesley Clark reminded Americans that our deployment of troops to Iraq leaves us powerless against threats from unexpected quarters, like the sun. "By failing to enlist France, Germany and Russia in his vendetta against Saddam, President Bush left us without allies against the far more significant threat posed by mother nature. The sun is completely amoral, willing to kill and destroy in order to establish hegemony." He added that, if nominated and elected, he would "establish equality among all celestial bodies." "The sun", he added, "while at times overheated, should elicit our understanding and empathy; it's a lonely task supplying energy to earthlings, in return for little recognition and less gratitude."

This just in: In an effort to distract readers from the fact that the rebuilding of Iraq is progressing far more slowly than promised by the Bush administration (uh, I guess Andrew Natsios' April claim that thge bill would be $1.7 billion, tops, just isn't going to hold, now, is it??), Horsefeathers lashes out at whatever Democrat contender they can, just for the heck of it... Don't DARE bring up how badly it's going, just feed the rabble more Republican spin, guys!

This is YOUR taxes at work, too: why aren't you complaining about the astronomical prices Halliburton is charging us?

Do you mean, "hired contrarian", you actually pay taxes? How un-contrarian a thing to do! In any case, I'd rather my taxes went to help build democracy in the Middle East than to support tyrants like Saddam. I gather, as a contarian, you would have opposed the huge expenditures for the Marshall plan post WWII. What a waste of $!!http://www.economist.com/world/africa/displayStory.cfm?story_id=2173583

Yeah, but far too much of our taxes is going to Halliburton. And not just our taxes, but our children's: we'll be paying this off for generations. Halliburton is charging 15 times the going rate for some commodities. It doesn't need to be done this way, it doesn't need to be nearly this expensive, and you don't help by sniping at Clark, as if HE'S the problem.

Don't you feel just a LITTLE BIT taken by being told the reconstruction would be $1.7bn and then seeing it balloon to $10bn plus?

Not really. I've had enough experience of life to know such estimates are as likely to be accurate as estimates of future budget deficits. If it were up to me, I'd set the goal and be prepared to devote as much of GDP as necessary to achieving it. The goal should be a stable, peaceful, democratic Middle East free of 9th century style tyrants and prepared to participate in modernity. This would be a great investment in our own future. It's no time for penny pinching.
