October 09, 2003OUR FRIENDS THE SAUDI ROYALS1: Saudi Princess Assails American History and Policy
Didn't another Saudi royal, Adel al Jubeir, explain how hurt and offended he was by any American doubts of the Saudi committment to the war on terror? Or did that only apply to non-infidels? How long will the Bush administration make an exception to the Bush doctrine ('You're with us or with the terrorists') for the Saudi thugocracy? |
Stephen and I exchanged some emails over a very relevant book review in the New York Times: 'Why America Slept,' by Gerald Posner. The reviewer says that in Posner's book, interrogators of "a senior aide to Osama bin Laden named Abu Zubaydah" hit on the idea of making their captive believe he was in the hands of Saudis; under that impression, Zubaydah showed relief, and "instructed them to call a senior member of the ruling Saudi family, Posner writes, and gave them a phone number from memory. 'He will tell you what to do,' Zubaydah said." (Full review here. Registration required, and you may get cooties.)
One wonders why the interrogators even thought to try that ruse... Maybe they knew something already?
