YASSER ARAFAT, JIMMY CARTER AND NICOLAI CEAUSESCU: PEACE LOVERS

The KGB's man speaks:

"...In March 1978 I secretly brought Arafat to Bucharest for final instructions on how to behave in Washington. "You simply have to keep on pretending that you'll break with terrorism and that you'll recognize Israel -- over, and over, and over," Ceausescu told him for the umpteenth time. Ceausescu was euphoric over the prospect that both Arafat and he might be able to snag a Nobel Peace Prize with their fake displays of the olive branch.

In April 1978 I accompanied Ceausescu to Washington, where he charmed President Carter. Arafat, he urged, would transform his brutal PLO into a law-abiding government-in-exile if only the U.S. would establish official relations. The meeting was a great success for us. Carter hailed Ceausescu, dictator of the most repressive police state in Eastern Europe, as a "great national and international leader" who had "taken on a role of leadership in the entire international community." Triumphant, Ceausescu brought home a joint communiqué in which the American president stated that his friendly relations with Ceausescu served "the cause of the world..."

I am so glad to see you nail Jimmy Carter this way! It helps distract the left wing Bush haters from Rummy's big hand shake with Saddam Hussein (who is now firmly in our grips!) Thank the 1st Amendment for web sites like Horsefeathers! Salaam! Salaam! Salaam!

I just wish that someobdy, anybody would just walk right up to Jimmy Carter and punch him in the mouth. The worst Democratic President since James Buchanan.

Joel, you seem man enough: why don't you?

It would be wrong, if tempting, to strike former Pres. Carter. He is an old man and nobody should punch, egg, pie or whatever former Presidents of the United States, IMHO, even a Nixon or a Clinton. (presumably I do not have to defend current Presidents, they are defended and anyay it goes without saying)

What I ask is: what can be done? What lies within the bounds of etiquette and/or legality? (because of course also the Secret Service would then pound you for hitting the Peanut) What did people do back when there was a concern with etiquette and manners?

Would one turn one's back? Spit on the floor? Bronx cheer? Say, "The love I bear thee affords no greater term than this: Thou are a villain?" Assume we are grown up and do not pound people surrounded by six or eight large suited earphoned armed men, nor our elders, what honorable opportunity exists to exploit such a rare personal communication with a potentate to express disapproval in a fashion which this person will easily understand?

For Carter, if it were not real serious lese-majeste to even mention it, a demonstration of suicide bombing might bring home to him the folly of his playing with Arafat. But again, no killing former (or current, G_d forbid) US Presidents, so I would think more in terms of performance art, bags of red paint and so forth, or good old speechifying perhaps. Still get busted by the SS, but...oh I dunno, better ideas welcome. It's not like you'll be able to hold him while you give a speech.

It's a pity that whatever your chance is will almost surely occur in the context of a never to be repeated, five second handshake opportunity. He could be killed, anybody can be killed (see the last episode of the 2nd season of the Fox show *24*), but that would not please me. I do not lust for the death of Jimmuh or anybody else, even if it might be just, or seem just.

And as they say, "If you kill 'im, he won't learn nuthin!" I would rather Carter and others would simply have the scales fall from their eyes and see the error of their ways. How to accomplish that in 5 seconds, I don't know. Perhaps (again ignoring SS) soaking in gas and setting oneself on fire? I do question whether there ever is reaching some people. It certainly is not worth it to commit suicide but if I could think of a sufficiently concise and trenchant remark I would like to have it handy against the eventuality.

In his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the man.

I criticize by creation -- not by finding fault.
