August 30, 2003KATHY BOUDIN: THE NY TIMES SAYS HER DEBT HAS BEEN PAIDBefore she makes the TV rounds with Barbara Walters and Larry King, describing her quest for social justice, read Bradford Wilson on Ms. Boudin and another seeker after a better world, Katherine Anne Power- here. |
Cicero once said "in all probability the disappearance of piety towards the gods will entail the disappearance of loyalty and social union among men as well as of justice herself, the queen of all the virtues."
We live in impious times.
But I remember 'tis not the punishment but the cause that makes the martyr.
I recall the old Highland saying as well,
"is cugach ceartas an eucoraich" (THE JUSTICE OF THE UNJUST IS TWISTED)
yet they laugh and call it justice.
But we must not be bitter nor burn with vengence at each act of impiety or seeming shameless injustice. The Old Book says God overlooks moments of ignorance because he has established a day and which he will judge the world with justice. Isaiah says "the Lord is a God of justice, blessed are those who wait for him."
I think it was Jefferson who said "I tremble for America recall that God is just." In the end a people who lack understanding will come to ruin. In the end we must accept the fact that some people are without shame and honor and more's the pity, the sorrow and the shame. And "is trom air taigh gun naire" ('Tis heavy the burden of a house without shame). Ms. Boudin, it appears to me, is suffering under that burden. Such shameless people's lives are excrement and they know it and are tormented by it.
Perhaps they have an inkling of what awaits them.
All I know is that I am glad that I personally don't have to forgive such a debt.
I don't have to condemn but nor have I to praise either nor respect those not worthy of praise and without smidgin of honor.
Posted by: Ricardo Munro on August 31, 2003 09:59 PMplease not my new email for personal commuications. I generally answer polite interesting messages. I block undignified SPAM with SPAM ALERT. It is a good thing I wasn't born yesterday. I've seen 42nd street and the Barrio Chino of Barcelona. Very tawdry, cheap and boring.
