BRITISH ANTI-SEMITISM: ALIVE AND FLOURISHING IN ACADEMIA
A young Israeli scientist has received the following reply to his application to work in an English laboratory:
Dear Amit Duvshani,
Thank you for contacting me, but I don't think this would work. I have a huge problem with the way that the Israelis take the moral high ground from their appalling treatment in the Holocaust, and then inflict gross human rights abuses on the Palestinians because the (Palestinians) wish to live in their own country. I am sure that you are perfectly nice at a personal level, but no way would I take on somebody who had served in the Israeli army. As you may be aware, I am not the only UK scientist with these views but I'm sure you will find another suitable lab if you look around.
Yours sincerely
Andrew Wilkie

How nice of him to conceed the "appalling treatment of the Holocaust", even as he turns the phrase into a condemnation of Jews as a whole.
He is however, quite happy to swallow the line of the palestinians, as oppressed people.
Just goes to show that intelligence is no impediment to stupidity
Posted by: Just Another Richard on June 26, 2003 07:36 PMThis moral pygmy, Andrew Wilkie is currently a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow. The Trust is an "independent" endowment fund, with...drum roll, please...some relationship to Wellcome PLC, a huge drug manufacturer.
So Wilkie takes the drug bandit's money; that's number 1.
England is a hostile, occupying power of 6 Counties that rightfully belong to the long-oppressed people of Ireland; that's number 2. (I'm not a flaming IRA guy; just that I know that the Irish, unlike the so-called Palestinians, actually have valid claims to their island)
So the good prof. takes drug money, and supports an oppressive occupying power by living in and (one presumes) paying taxes to jolly olde England.
This is all in illustration of the point that you made in your post's title. Just providing a little backup.
Wilkie's not just an anti-Semite, he's a bloody hypocrite.
Posted by: Jack Rich on June 26, 2003 09:20 PMIt is at least moronic to compare the intentional and unprovoked murder of 6 millions with the harsh treatment of a population supporting barbaric terrorist movements.
Posted by: marek on June 27, 2003 02:26 AMThe total death count of Palestinian in latest intifada is about 2500, with the illegal combatants, violating Geneva convention, constituting the majority of casualties.
As somebody said, education is not a guarantee of the wisdom and there is no limit to stupidity.
Indeed. One has only to look at the career of Noam Chomsky to realize that one can be a genius in one field of human endeavor (in his case, linguistics) and a pretentious worse-than-fool in another. (At least an ordinary fool is free from malice.)
And to quote Richard Feynman (in "What do you care what other people think?"): "Ordinary fools are alright: you can correct them, help them out. A pretentious fool: not that I cannot stand."

Posted by: Former Belgian on June 27, 2003 10:10 AMThis is a response to herr professor sent to me by Naomi Ragen, a prominent novelist and commentator in Israel.
Dear Dr. Wilkie,
Ah the wonders of the internet. No longer can closet anti Semites ply their
trade under the cover of darkness. Now the entire world knows who you are, as
your disgusting bias in dealing with Amit Duvshani is now out there for all to
see. The Jews have been living in the land of Israel for three thousand years.
Indeed, as Disraeli pointed out, while your ancestors were still swinging from
the trees, ours were priests in the Temple of Solomon.
You can accept or reject Mr. Duvshani on the basis of his academic
qualifications. But to reject him on the basis of his qualifications as a human
being because he served in the Israeli army and defended the Jews in their
ancestral homeland shows me, an Israeli, a Jew, the author of six books, one
play, and numerous articles that you Brits are still swinging from the trees in
a Neanderthal morality that stinks of eras only lately ended.
For shame, Herr Professor. For shame Oxford.

Comments by Professor Andrew Wilkie
Posted by: Stephen Rittenberg on June 27, 2003 03:52 PMA spokesperson for the University of Oxford said:
“Our staff may hold strongly felt personal opinions. Freedom of expression is a fundamental tenet of University life, but under no circumstances are we prepared to accept or condone conduct that appears to, or does, discriminate against anyone on grounds of ethnicity or nationality, whether directly or indirectly. This candidate is entitled to submit an application and to have it dealt with fairly according to our normal criteria.
“Professor Wilkie has issued a personal apology regarding remarks he made by e mail to an applicant for a research degree at Oxford. An immediate and thorough investigation of this matter is now being carried out in accordance with the University’s procedures and a report will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor next week.”
Note to editors:
The full text of Professor Wilkie’s apology is:
“I recognise and apologise for any distress caused by my e mail of 23 June and the wholly inappropriate expression of my personal opinions in that document. I was not speaking on behalf of Oxford University or any of its constituent parts. I entirely accept the University of Oxford’s Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies.”
If I were Amit Duvshani and I got my application to Oxford re-accepted, I'd tell them to stick it and go to Cambridge instead.

What strikes me most about this is Wilkie's arrogance. It isn't *his* lab--he didn't pay for it. The funds that would be used to pay this scientist aren't *his* money. By what imaginable standard does he think that he has the right to use university resources to advance his personal political agenda?
The levels of arrogance that we are now seeing in academia have probably not been observed since the days when the landed aristocracy was riding high.
Posted by: David Foster on June 27, 2003 07:54 PMThink CNN is going to cover this? How bout CBS, or NBC, or ABC, or FOX, or.....or.... AND why NOT? Weve been treated to a never ending story about bigotry against Moslems ..but what about this incident and all the other Antisememtic incidents that have gone UNREPORTED or underreported..
I can think of ONE..It seems several years ago, Palistinian Gynmasts SPIT at Israeli Gymnasts.
I can think of another. It seems that recently an Arab Country with a HANDICAPPED Sports team refused to play the opposing ISRAELI Team.
What ELSE is going on? And where are we..sliding back 50 years? where Jews will not be allowed in your neighborhood Condo Community by the good people of the Condo Board? OR will we see a replay of "You cant stay at our Hotel" ie No Jews that kill Palistinians allowed? Dont say it cant happen...looks like it in fact CAN HAPPEN.
Posted by: Leah on June 27, 2003 09:29 PMNot only can it happen, but the recent SC decision in Lawrence will make nonsense the rule of the land. I question why to be a lawyer anymore, since the decision, if followed, will protect homosexual rights while ensuring that islamo-fascists will have free reign to provoke their vision of terror. The court has signalled a new era of HOMOS=GOOD, JEWS=BAD. Hey, we're only half-way to Kristallnacht, but we're resisting Roe and Casey . . .

Posted by: Barry on June 28, 2003 06:58 AMWhen the "coalition of the willing" went to the Iraqi Ball they made sure not to be seen in public holding the hand of "Cinderaeli". So if from the top down "diversity" is the name of the game What can one expect from the lesser mortals but to follow!
I'll offer a word in defense of this guy.
I sent him a rather nasty email expressing my displeasure, and he responded, as he did to everyone else, with the "non-apology" form letter. I pressed him at it, asking if he, personally, still stood by his position.
Today he wrote back and said that he did not.
"I do not stand by my position. I agree that I was wrong. We all make mistakes sometimes and I made a wopper. Sorry."
Now, I'd like to cut the guy some slack for this. I've made a few whoppers over the years myself, and I give him credit for finally offering a real apology.
There is a difference between a carelessly bigoted act, and a truly bigoted person. The difference is in what follows when you've had a chance to reconsider.
Posted by: Mike Jackmin on June 28, 2003 09:33 AMMike:
Good: he admits his mistake. Not good: actions have long term consequences on his university's, his department's, and his own reputations. If I as a prof were, for example, to call a Cuban-American student a gusano (which in some programs can probably actually get you promoted) or some other act of naked politically correct bigotry, I should expect the hammer to come down on me good and hard, if not just from the administration trying to save face, but from the general public as well. And I had better damn well have a good solid stock apology full of genuine and explicit contrition (and very maybe a resignation) ready to go. There are mistakes. And there are mistakes. And there is what he did.
Posted by: Bill on June 28, 2003 04:27 PMI also wrote the guy; got a stock response. Wrote back; another stock response. Of course he has probably received hundred of emails so a stock answer is not unexpected.
My sense from his answers --- he claims that he is not an anti-semite and "Primo Levi is one of my most admired authors" --- is that he is in fact truly clueless, extremely naive and doesn't even understand what he has done.
His letter to the Israeli scientist was inept at every level; he is not even an astute bigot, aware enough to hide his sins.
Posted by: David on June 28, 2003 05:56 PMDavid.......he wrote the Primo Levi thing to a poster on another blogsite, and I am sure, she thought it was a personal email.
So now he is using Primo Levy.(see, I read Jews)
disgusting....
Posted by: ploome on June 28, 2003 10:45 PMSo Primo Levy is one of his most admired authors? That's even more despicable; just like saying 'I'm not anti-semitic -- some of my best friends are Jews.' My G*d, some of the Nazis used that line.
Posted by: ntc on June 29, 2003 04:16 PMThat the esteemed Prof had no idea
Posted by: Boris A.Kupershmidt on June 30, 2003 02:51 AMhow revealingly creepy his e-mail was, is an indication that the usual level of casual anti-semitism among the British intelligentia has now reached the pathological heights.
I'd wait to see if Oxford boots this hate-filled bigot off the campus. If not, then
that ancient place of learning deserves
only contempt, boycott, and ostracism.

Dear All,
It¹s no fun to come into the lab at the beginning of a busy day where I am supposed to head a cancer research lab and to have to sift through a pile of unwanted spam.
To return the favor (i.e. nonrequested information), I will tell you the story of my Palestinian graduate student, a very energetic and charming young lady (she is Christian, not Moslem by the way, but that should not make a difference to you!?):
Here father, born and raised in Jerusalem (where his family has lived for many many generations), has been forced from what he considers his home country and has had to life since then in exile in Amman, Jordan. Although he is a distinguished and very successful businessman, to this day he is not allowed to return to Jerusalem after several decades. My graduate student has further lost two female cousins (7 and 11 years old) to stray rockets fired from an Israeli helicopter in whatever revenge mission they were on. I would guess it is likely those two girls were innocent bystanders.
Compared to this, the hardship faced by the applicant mentioned in your mails appears to be unpleasant but almost bearable. Would you agree with that?
Would you also be willing to spend some of your precious time to try and stop the killing of children in this idiotic fighting which has been going on for centuries now?

"The court has signalled a new era of HOMOS=GOOD, JEWS=BAD. Hey, we're only half-way to Kristallnacht, but we're resisting Roe and Casey . . . "
What on earth does this SCOTUS decision have to do with this issue?
In both cases it's HUMAN RIGHTS=GOOD, BIGOTED ASSHOLES =BAD.

Posted by: Yehudit on June 30, 2003 06:12 AMYou posters are all hand fed by the media masters who want you to believe the Israelies are God's children and can do no wrong. Wilkie said what he did probably because he watches the BBC news network which isnt run by the Jewish Media bosses, they actually have fair and balanced reporting. Wouldnt you fight tooth and nail if people were settling on your land? Before any response to this make sure you knowledge of worldliness isnt from what you watch on TV. Free your mind.
Posted by: Stern Gang on June 30, 2003 10:41 PMThe anonymous coward above is quite off his sad little rocker, eh?
Let's try this game with someone other than the Jews, since we all know they are pure evil and deserve to be drowned at birth. How about: "I disagree with the Iranian Mullahs' violent stifling of protestors. Therefore, I will not hire any Iranians to work in my lab." Or "I am opposed to atrocious treatment of Chechen activists by Russian armed forces. Therefore, my university should never cooperate academically with any Russian scientist." Or "Chinese opression of Tibetans and appropriating of their culture and artifacts is shameful. Therefore, no Chinese research will be published by my magazine."
Discrimnating against people based on their nationality is equivalent to racism. The point is not whether every policy of the Israeli government is correct in every way. The point is whether Amit Duvshani should be punished for it any more than you would be responsible for your governments' actions. (If you weren't a coward, of course, I would be able to give you a better example.)
Posted by: angua on July 1, 2003 12:47 AMHey, I’m glad you brought the examples of other cultures into the equation. Can you answer these questions? How many American soldiers died during World War II, how many Jews died? Give two reasons why Hitler was an evil tyrant; now give two reasons why he wanted the Jews out of Europe? Can't answer? I think if you add a Jew into the mix everything changes. If the cultures you listed above received the same treatment who would have heard about it? The reason people know about this is because of what I stated. Let me leave you with this question, by allowing the Israeli into the program wouldn’t this ultimately benefit the country of Israel? Wasn’t this where he was headed with banning the student?
Posted by: Stern Gang on July 1, 2003 03:43 PMStern Gang, you are one of these pathetic people, that through their actions promote wars that others have to fight and die in. You dissiminate propaganda for international criminals of the worst kind - the kind that are bent on world domination through religious control and murder.
Your pathetic left views are being used by underdeveloped human scum. The money you get from them (and you DO get money from them) is blood money, and will cause collossal loss of life in the upcoming World War that you help to promote.
In short, you are the kind of man I would gladly shoot on sight, if I had the chance. The only thought that calms me down is, that you will probably be killed first by your own retarded best friends. Just like this bitch Rachel Corie, whose picture you present proudly on your website.

It is strange that a country like Britain, which has created so much pain and misery throughout the whole world dares to even open it's mouth about Israel. I'm sure that if it was England, which was dealing with the Palestinian problem they would have long ago massacred every Palestinian alive. So I think that stupid, pseudo leftie, antisemitic professors from Oxford and other Imperialist, English idiots should shut their mouths rather than delve in in matters about which they have no clue. It seems that the pseudo lefties and the Islamo fascists have made some sort of a pact. They seem to think that GLOBALIZATION = JEW and the best way to weaken the Jews today is by attacking their country and supporting liars in the false name of peace such as Yasser Arafat. What they do not understand is that the Jews were persecuted wherever they went. Not only by the Holocaust but also by the Dhimma in Arab countries and by the Spanish Inquisition in Spain. Neither do they know that the Jews did not come to Israel with the incentive of making war against the Arabs. It was the Arabs who started the war. Not to mention that the Arabs living there were stateless nomads. And further on it is strange that no Arab country ever tried to help the "Palestinians" by offering them citizenship because they all want to put the blame on Israel. By blaming Israel for the misery of all Arabs, the Arab dictators manage to channel the agression of their people, which is supposed to be against them, in a different direction. To keep ther own people gullible and suppressed for as long as possible. This is the true aim of modern, political Islam. And who do you think is the scapegoat. No other than Israel. The jews again, as always . Hated because they are more advanced maybe?
Posted by: Imanuel richtman on July 3, 2003 06:47 PMI agree with you on Britain, historically responsible for much of the world’s pain, suffering and creation of Israel. But then you go on about how Jews have been “Oppressed” without pointing out reasons why they were kicked out of every country they tried to make their home. Without giving a complete reason for the individual countries you name above I will try to summarize best I can. Historically Jewish tribes have moved into various civilizations without homogenizing themselves with the people around them. First and foremost they remained Jews, secondly the religion of Jews teaches that it is their divine right to the wealth of their host nation, wherever that may be. This is why the been kicked of Rome, thrown out of Egypt, fought off from their spread westward in Europe and so on, the list goes on. I will read you a few Jewish scriptures since this comes as a shock to most and no one ever bothers to research this on their own. “Therefore, thy gates shall be open continually… that men may bring unto thee the wealth of the Gentiles and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted”… Then it goes on to say “Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles….. And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and aliens shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers… Ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves”. The Roman or Egyptians might have prayed for a good harvest, or victory over their enemies, but never to reap the fruit of some else’s labors.
